Please read on for the Round up Post…

The Modern Crewel Embroidery Book Tour has been happening over the last two weeks and this round-up post is a lovely way to share all the beautiful items that my guests have created in one place.

The Scandi Fish hoop was one of the most popular designs with both Susan Ache and Sarah Ashford stitching up bright colourful versions! Here’s  my original on the left.

Susan (above) used Aurifil 12wt wool and Sarah (below) used 12wt cotton.

It’s been a delight to see the designs stitched up in different threads and something I’ve been looking forward to since I started stitching these myself.

I did use Appleton’s Crewel wool on a couple of the projects in the book but not the Tendrils Pot.

So I was very happy that Emma Jones of Vintage Sewing Box used this to create her beautiful version.

She chose such pretty delicate shades! Emma also wrote a lovely blog post about the book with lots more lovely images which you can read here.

Krista Hennebury of Poppyprint made a great start on the Honeycomb Hoop (from the book cover).

She used the 12wt wool threads from my new Aurifil collection ‘Stitching with Wool’ and it’s been a revelation to see this design stitched in all these bright colours as opposed to the warm subtle colours I used for the original.

Another popular project from the book was the Labyrinth pouch.

Lisa Dolson finished the whole thing and made this smart and classy looking pouch. I just love the colours she chose against that grey linen and the white outline.

Karen Lewis made a valiant start on her Labyrinth pouch (below left) and got all the outlines stitched in time for her stop. I actually love the minimalist look of this and wonder whether she should just make the pouch like this!

Another minimalist take on one of the patterns is Carina of Carina Craft Blog’s version of the Mini Patchwork Hoop.

Carina chose just two colours and added her own stitch ideas (which I heartily approve of), she also used sashiko thread to create this lovely pink and green design.

Kerry of Very kerry Berry has been working on the Loops Stitch Booklet and produced a fantastic video of her making colonial knots which you can view here.

But it was Kay Walsh who really knocked it out of the park with her gorgeous mash-up of two book projects

Kay stitched up all three of the Mini Patchwork Hoops on to denim using 12wt wool threads from my Aurifil collection and then sewed them together to make this beautiful fabric pot using the pattern from the Tendrils Pouch!

Not only did Kay do all this stitching and make such a gorgeous pot but her and her colleague Jenni Smith produced this wonderful video where they discuss the book in depth in their charming Yorkshire accents! You can watch it over on Instagram here.

How happy does kay look with her pot?!

I was so inspired by Kay’s gorgeous versions of the Mini Patchwork Hoops that I thought I would stitch a new one myself. The original trio use a single colour, in different shades, for each hoop – orange, pink and green. So I decided to mix things up a bit like Kay did and produced this new multi version with all 3 colours!

I think this little hoop would be the perfect starter project for a class on Modern Crewel Embroidery so watch out for more news on this coming soon!

GIVEAWAY!

I have one eBook copy of Modern Crewel Embroidery to give away today. When my book stock arrives (hopefully next week) and after the official book launch I will giveaway a hard copy too but for now you can win an eBook (very useful for printing the patterns) by leaving a comment below.

  1. I used to do crewel many years ago and your modern take on projects makes me want to try again. My favorite colors are pink, aqua and yellow.

  2. As I read through the post I fell in love with each project more and more. I’m new to hand embroidery and your book is so inspiring.

  3. I did crewel work years ago and seeing the projects from your book has inspired me to start again. My favorite colors are turquoise, coral and yellow

  4. Love the designs! I have lots of 12wt cotton embroidery thread, would that work OK instead of wool? (I noticed one of your contributors used cotton). My favourite 3 colours are teal, navy and emerald green

  5. My favourite colour is that of bluebells – my family are always arguing whether they are blue or purple, got a soft spot at the moment for teal and petrol blues but they don’t really go with the bluebell. I’ve definitely got the “blues”.
