Supernova Stardust Quilt and other new Academy 2024/25 samples

Today we launched the second year of our Thread House Academy. The first year has been a wonderful experience for both students and us! And now we have a whole new programme of classes planned for 2024/25. I thought I would share my classes here.

We have three themed terms and the first is ‘curves’. My class will be Poplars. This was formerly my Freehand Curves Landscape workshop which culminated in my Poplars quilt.

I have made two new smaller samples so those who can’t commit to a whole quilt can still try out the technique.

The cushion was made with my favourite Essex Linen, Manchester and Kaleidoscope Wovens fabrics and hand quilted with Aurifil 12wt wool. It goes wonderfully with our new green velvet sofa.

The second is a long narrow mini quilt made from my stash with patterned fabric and quilted on my new Handi Quilter Moxie XL (which I am loving BTW!).

You can read more about this class and all of our 2024/25 prospectus here.

Our theme for the second term is stars and I have gone a little left field and chosen to interpret this with a supernova! An exploding star!

My new Supernova Stardust quilt uses the same Freehand Foundation Piecing technique as both my Dandelion Clock and Sea Urchin Temperature quilts and in this workshop we will be tackling all three of these quilt designs.

I quilted this on my new Moxie XL too and used a mixture of ruler work and free-motion. It’s another version of the Modern Improv Doodle style that I am so obsessed with at the moment.

I also used Vlieseline 80/20 Wadding (number 279) for all the quilts featured here. It is my new favourite wadding. It’s super stable and perfect for these densely quilted art quilts. What I love most is that it doesn’t ‘creep’ inwards as you wind it on the long arm rollers like some other brands, it just stays flat and straight and so you don’t need to worry about it!

Our final term is themed around Text and I have chosen applique and embroidery for my text medium. I designed this new Scandi Style Folk Art quilt picture which I have made into a mini quilt.

I may make a future version into a cushion and also want to try stretching it on to a box canvas.

In the class I will offer a few different motto options as well as helping students develop their own text design.

I used some of the new Aurifil 8wt cotton to hand quilt this piece, is was the prefect weight to give my stitches a bit more presence against the embroidery.

I’m just back from QuiltCon in Raleigh, North Carolina where I taught and gave my temperature quilts lecture. Before I left I managed to ‘pimp my denim jacket’ with some Dream Birds! I’ve wanted to decorate this jacket for ages but couldn’t think of the right thing to do.

By stitching on my own Dream Bird patterns I became my own advertising hoarding! Also do you like my new pink ‘do’?!

The bird at the bottom is a Red Capped Bobbity, a new exclusive Dream Bird that I designed for our Thread House Academy FREE TASTER WEEKEND which is this weekend!

There is still plenty of time to sign up and get involved. The idea is to ‘try before you buy’ with one workshop from each of us. Read more about it and sign up here.

If you do decide to join us then you can take advantage of the 25% off introductory offer between now and Monday! If you decide not too then please enjoy the free classes on us!
