Jo Avery – the Blog

Cover Star

I am very excited to share this news with you and I hope you don’t all think I am bragging as I tell you about another magazine mention. Because this one is rather special.
Not only is my Liberty Dresden Plate Cushion the big picture on the front cover, but can you also see that smiley blonde woman at the bottom? That’s me, that is!!

I was really pleased just to get this cushion project in to Popular Patchwork, but then they also decided to do a whole 3 page spread on ‘my creative space’ as part of a series they are doing!

It is such a lovely article and I am chuffed to bits with it (thank you Jane Rae!). And as it finishes so my project begins over another 4 pages! I am feeling very spoiled by Popular Patchwork…

I have also been desperate to show you the cushion which I made all the way back in December!

I took quite a few photos of it before I had to send it off (so just indulge me here).

It is the 4th in a series of Dresden Plate cushions I have made in the last few months. This one is all in Liberty Lifestyle fabric, including a large portion from their new Stile collection (which I should have in stock in the shop any day now). I am planning to produce a kit of this design to go with the Notting Hill one I did a few weeks back (which has been really popular so far).

I designed a new embroidered centre for this project. It’s a bit more intricate than the first one and includes motifs from a few of the Stile fabrics.

Though leaning slightly more towards traditional quilting, Popular Patchwork is definitely embracing more modern styles at the moment and has some really nice quilts in this edition. I especially love the Kantha inspired throw by Mandy Munroe and accompanying article all about Kanthas.

So if you’d like to get the inside info on my sewing room and methods, as well as the full pattern and tutorial for this cushion, then get yourself down to your local newsagents (or order online here) and grab a copy of May’s Popular Patchwork!
Thank you for your patience with the bragging 🙂

  1. Huge Congratulations Jo! This is definitely well worth telling everybody about, and it's not bragging at all! Blogging is all about sharing results, good, bad or GREAT!! I shall be buying my copy asap.

  2. Way to go!!! Your pillow is beautiful and you look marvellous!! Love the embroidery detail… I'll have to think of something like that on my next Dresden plate project! Thanks for sharing this exciting event!

  3. Oh WOW Jo!! well done and congratulations!! Beautiful cushion, and as your celebrity status is rising, I might need to queue up this summer to get your signature on this copy! lol! Well deserved though. I have always said you have an amazing flair for design and so glad it is getting recognised! Happy Easter and hope you get a bit of a rest xxx

  4. Hi Jo, your cushion is gorgeous! Thanks for your kind words about my Kantha Quilt. I've yet to see the magazine properly as I sort of live in NYC and my copy is in the UK! The magazine is now on the shelves in the US in Barnes and Nobel as Popular Quilting, so you're famous here too!
