Jumbo Cathedral Window Quilt

First of all, what do you think of my new blog design?!
It’s really great having a husband who’s not only an IT genius but used to be a graphic designer as well. Jonathan is the brains behind our main website as well as the Stitch Gathering website, and now he has turned his attention to my little blog and I am VERY happy with the result! I hope you all like it too. Thanks Jonathan!

And secondly, here’s another quilt that has been finished for a while but which I haven’t shared because I was waiting for a publication date.

This is my Jumbo Cathedral Window. I’ve been on a bit of a Cathedral Window trip for a while now, and actually started this last year in preparation for a new workshop.
With Cathedral Windows this big it takes a bit of time to get the folding and pressing sorted (you do start with a really big square of fabric – too big for an ironing board!), but there is very little sewing (all on the machine) and there is also no basting and quilting!
I have put wadding behind all of the windows, and that together with the weight of the folded fabric means it doesn’t need anything else. So though it seems to be taking a long time, once you’ve opened up all your windows you only have to bind it and it’s finished!

I used 2 x Amy Butler Lark charm packs (Rowan charm packs are 6″ squares – perfect for this project) and a ton of Kona Charcoal!

In fact that was my only problem with this quilt (or strictly speaking a coverlet
as it is not really a quilt – see above!), as I bought the charcoal at 3
different times and each time the colour was a slightly different
shade! I was worried it would spoil the whole project, but you can’t
really see it from the front. But you can certainly see it from the back!

It’s featured in this new magazine Creative Quilting, which is a special, one-off edition like the Creative Bag Making one that my crochet bag was in a few months ago.

It was being launched at Festival of Quilts so I think it’s safe to mention it now. I actually think it’s a fantastic magazine, with 16 great projects.

I love the look of it too, they have taken some stunning photos of my quilt.

And here’s a gorgeous quilt by Fiona Poppy Makes using jelly rolls (she will be teaching a jelly roll class at our Stitch Gathering retreat).

I also love this quilt by Mandy Munroe, who always designs such fabulous projects.

That’s just a small taste of what is on offer in this bumper packed magazine. You can pick up a copy at
WH Smiths or order one online here.

And if you think this quilt looks familiar it’s because it’s hanging in our exhibition at the moment and crept into one of the photos I showed in the exhibition preview post!

  1. Wonderful quilt Jo. As always superb fabric choices – how strange about the back tho. Mind you it doesn't detract from the fabulousness of the quilt.
Love your new blog header! Suits you.

  2. that's yummy!

i tried CW when i first started patchwork, so about 20 years ago – it wasn't an ideal beginners project!!!! I'll. have to look out for the magazine and see whether my skills have progressed!

  3. Just came across your blog tonight…wished I had known about your shop a few months ago when I was in Edinburgh visiting our daughter. She lives a 20 min walk from your business.
Love the colours you have used in your quilt. Good luck with the quilt exhibition. from Jenny in Australia

  4. What a lovely quilt. I would never have thought of using such a dark colour for the main fabric. There were times when I wished I'd machine-sewed my CW cushion, but it's done now and just waiting to be made up.

  5. Just catching up a little this evening and fell head over heels for your quilt!!! And the fabrics you chose! Love how they are set off with the dark ground. Jealous that you know how to make cathedral windows in the first place!!! Absolutely gorgeous quilt. AND love the new look of the website! Very pretty. Makes my eyes happy!

  6. Is there any way I can buy the pattern? To buy that magazine and have it shipped to the states will cost me over $20 and I have some charm packs I would love to make into this quilt! It showcases fabric so well 🙂
