  1. My stash is reaching the limits of the available space. I am now considering getting some of those vacuum storage bags to see if I can fit more fabric into the same space. If that fails, then Tardis technology will be the only solution.

  2. Boy, we all need some tips on storing our fabric! I tend to keep collections together on shelves or in decorative baskets. Random fabric for backings or scraps projects is stored in clear boxes under my cutting table and organized scraps are in smaller clear boxes. I like having my fabric visible so I can quickly find just the right piece when I'm working!

  3. Well, I have a pretty small stash, I have to admit, but my friend bought be a fat quarter storage bag, and I love it! In fact, I've filled and am planning to get another one! Before that I was keeping them in a relatively small clip top box, which I also liked…..

  4. Jo, I have a nice stash but also a huge fondness and use of my books so the books stay and the fabric is allocated into plastic totes downstairs. Not ideal, but that way I'm not overwhelmed and can find what I need when I need it.
My Mom also has some fabrics kitted with their patterns in "under the bed storage totes" to contain a project or two that will be done in the near future. As for backing fabrics, the next time your mattresses get flipped, store some of the larger widths of fabric flat between your mattresses. LOL That will make you feel like your the princess in the Princess and the pea!

  5. II forgot to add that my home is more a cottage so space is a commodity is why I have come up with these different solutions. A friend's husband bought a garden shed to hold her fabrics after her aunt left her with a double sized stash. Nice husband right?

  6. I use large but shallow clear plastic bins and line up my fat quarters and half yards so that the folded edges are up. That way I can see everything that is in the bin. I divide bins by color, but also have bins for homespuns, low volume, Halloween, Christmas, solids, etc. Some bins are by designer (like Kaffe, Cotton + Steel). I stack them on shelves in a closet or in a cupboard. It works really well. I also have a big drawer of background fabrics (bigger pieces), My "kits" for future projects are in a couple of drawers.

  7. I don't have a huge stash but what I do have is stored in the closet in those shoe hanging things. You can store quite a bit of fabric in them. And I keep my scraps in a laundry basket under my sewing table ready to add to scrap quilts or scrappy paper piecing. It's all sew much fun!

  8. I just have my piles of FQs sitting on a shelf and in no particular order. That means I shuffle through the piles when I am looking for a particular color or pattern. So sorry, I'm not much help. Thanks for hosting this blog hop, the book would certainly help in diminishing my pile.

  9. I have an armoir that I've put wooden crates in the cabinet part as shelving where I store my bigger cuts (more than a yard) rolled onto foam board like faux bolts. Then in the lower half I store my smaller cuts and batting in drawers. It's not as tidy as it sounds, but it's a system that works for me. Thank you for the opportunity to win!

  10. I have two vertical bookshelves with all of my fabric folded and stacked, and as a rule, when I can't fit anymore fabric on them then I have to destash! I reached that point recently and this weekend I also used lots of older prints I wasn't super in love with anymore to make three baby quilt tops to donate to a charity, so that took a small bite out of my stash as well!

  11. Right now, I have a floor to almost ceiling corner shelving unit. It is horribly messy, but it was a free unit. I am thinking an old dresser painted a fantastic color might be the way to go for me. Thanks for the chance to win such a grand assortment!!

  12. Congrats on the new book and thanks for a great giveaway. I've an antique roll front oak filing cabinet with pull out shelves that stores about half my stash. The rest is divided amonst a series of Ikea storage boxes wihch are easy to stack but it a bt of a nuisance when the boxes you want always seem to be bottom of the pile but I'll get shelves to store them on and then I should bw well organised.

  13. I have my stash sorted by project, then some of the ramdon Fat quuarters are in Wire basket drawers from the Container store. it is easy to find what I need . I also recently made some one hour baskets to keep Fat Quarter bundles, they look so pretty!

  14. Woohoo! Great giveaway. I wish I had a stash problem but I'm a newbie quilter and my whole stash is still just a few fq stacks. Someday…

  15. I store my fabric by color in a large cabinet. Smaller cuts are stored in plastic drawers by color. I have clear shoe boxes where I store 2 1/2 inch strips by color. Congrats on the new book!

  16. Since I tend to buy a lot of bundles, I store them in boxes and then just label the boxes with washi tape. I've found some photo and other cute storage boxes that I can stack.

  17. Gorgeous giveaway. I wrap 1/2 yards and more around comic board (cardboard) and store in hanging baskets and all my fat quarters are in the drawer of an old washstand … like everyone else, it spills over and I have scraps everywhere! Good luck with the book; it looks fabby.

  18. I don't have any suggestions but I will be reading what everyone before me has to offer!!! Thanks for the chance to win this awesome giveaway prize!!!

  19. What an awesome giveaway! ? I have no suggestions…I live alone and so I can "display" my fabrics everywhere. I would love to win this! Thanks for the opportunity!

  20. I don't have a massive stash (although I've come a long way from the time when I could keep all my fabric in a bairn's shoe box!) but I store it all in Ikea boxes – they're separated by colour and the scraps are in one box and the larger pieces are in another. You can see them here https://flic.kr/p/qBjGsQ. Thanks for such a generous giveaway!

  21. When it comes to my storage needs I include a trip to Ikea when visiting my grands. They love to hang out in Playland and I love to shop…it's a win win for all ?

  22. I would say bookshelves, but sine you already use them, maybe a different way to fold and stack will give you more room? Good luck! And thanks for the chance to win!

  23. I have my stash in plastic storage drawer units on castors, 3 fit under my worktop in my sewing room. They are arranged in colours for Fq's and half metres, as well as drawers for novelty fabrics, specialty ones and larger pieces of fabric.

  24. Hi Jo, and thanks for this incredibly generous giveaway! The book looks fascinating, and you are right about the fabric – all killers! Thanks also for your inspiring blog. I love the little house pincushion. I store my fabric by color in clear shoeboxes. My stash is fairly small, so it hasn't gotten out of control yet. But I wish it would! 🙂

  25. Fantastic giveaway! The book is already on my wish list. As for fabric storage, mine is stored in an ikea storage unit, in drawers, colour coded. Large scraps are colour sorted in small paper bags, small scraps stored in old panettone tins. Not a perfect solution but works ok for now.

  26. Love the book. I use a standing wire basket frame with shelves that pull out from ikea with a different colour in each draw. The overspill goes on my bed linen shelves

  27. Thank you for a great giveaway. Mine lives under the bed in boxes. It sounds like you need more shelving. On elf my friends has an old cupboard which she painted and stores her fabric inside on lovely lined shelves. x

  28. In theory, mine is all in an antique sideboard, and on top of it as well…also in theory sorted out by color and style…. in theory. 😉

  29. how about a large curtain pole mounted high up and hang from it a sheet sized bit a strong fabric. and to this add pockets with sugar bag bottoms. big enough to hold the size of a FQ then you can colour code all your stash

  30. I'm a newbie, so all I've got is a box or so of fabric. But it *is* starting to burst at the seams, so I suppose it would be a good idea to start looking through all the ideas posted so far! This giveaway looks awesome, thanks for the chance to win!

  31. Even after many trips to The Container Store, I still have stacks of fabric on every flat surface. Just don't think about that while fabric shopping. 😉

  32. What an amazing giveaway! Thanks for the chance to win 🙂 I store my fabric in a big wardrobe and an airing cupboard currently! I sort it by size so I know what my options are depending on what size project I'm planning x

  33. I have this book and it has some nice projects in it. I have no solution to the over stashing as I have the same problem too! Di x

  34. From what I've seen, the book looks wonderful – congrats to you all.
I'm afraid I am all about keeping fabric in plastic tubs, oh to have my own sewing space 🙁
    Thanks for the chance xxx

  35. The book looks smashing! The fabrics a total bonus lol
I wish you loads of success with the book : _
I reckon a bigger house is probably needed for the stash – I donesized my home last year – BIG MISTAKE as far as the stash is concerned LOL

  36. Double the fun! A great looking new book full of sewing projects/inspiration AND killer fabric. Awesome start to the week. Thanks for the chance, Jo!

I'm pretty happy with my stash storage solutions – lots of shelves for yardage and clear containers for small bits (organized by size and scraps organized by colour), but it's becoming clear to me that I need to sew FASTER or I'm going to run out of space. ;o)

  37. Ive seen some projects from this book. It looks great. My husband built a blanket box which I keep most of my fabric in. That way I can make fit my decor and hide my stash.

  38. Love that description that the fabrics are all killers not fillers! Ha!
I keep my fabrics in ikea CD storage boxes sorted &labeled by colour. That way they're protected from fading and it loojs tidy, but I most likely don't have a lot in comparison!

  39. It looks like a fun book. I keep most of my fabric in a large chest of drawers but it's expanding out of it so I need to come up with some new projects to get some of it used up!

  40. I store my fabric in pigeon hole shelves. They're brilliant for storing by designer or by colour – I picked them up very cheaply at auction. I love that the fabrics are all in one place & look great too. (Jane Olley)

  41. Congratulations on the book!!! Thank you for a chance to win!!! I don't have a big enough stash but I have seen some really nice clear bags to store fabric i!! I will share on Instagram!!!!! }!{

  42. That fabric is cooler than a snowman's cold bits. I keep my fabric stored by colour but I don't have *that* much, contrary to what my other half would say…

  43. Lovely fabrics – I don't have any advice for a big stash as mine is pretty wee…….but it would be a little bigger if I won! Juliex

  44. I store my stash in clear plastic boxes and keep them under my desk. It's good because it's portable and doesn't get dusty. I sort all my scrappy bits into sizes (Large scraps, big enough for hexies, too small for hexies but big enough for improv blocks, strings for wrapping round presents etc) and keep them in sandwich bags. Glam!

  45. Wow, this book looks like a good one, full of inspiration! And that stack of fabric, drool! Can't offer anything about fabric storage as mine is a mess! I've heard that some people store fabric in the trunk of the car — wait, no, they HIDE it there! LOL

  46. I store my fabrics in plastic baskets by colour in a cupboard so no sun or dust damage and the bigger pieces are flat on the shelves

  47. I store my fabrics in plastic baskets by colour in a cupboard so no sun or dust damage and the bigger pieces are flat on the shelves

  48. I'm so excited to see your work in the book!! I can't wait to get my hands on a copy!! When I have the space I'm going to mount each of my 1/2 m fabrics or more onto comic boards, so that i can pretend I have my own little shop!! Sad I know, but it will look very beautiful and organised!

  49. HI, if you mean yardage, I'm not sure I'm much help.I have just a shelved area for that. But if you mean fat quarters, I love the wooden (old+cheap) cd cabinets given a fresh coat of paint and they add their own COLOR WOW! to your sewing room.
    Thanks for a sweet giveaway!

  50. I have fabric on shelves, in bins, in storage boxes, and in closets. Some would say I need to stop buying fabric and use what I have. These people are not my friends.

  51. I confess I've used oldest daughter's room – she sent me an image she found on Pinterest "I sent my daughter to university so i could use her room for my fabric stash" – oooops! She's in Australia now, so I know I'll get at least 24 hours warning when she's coming back!

  52. It appears that Google swallowed my comment…not trying to enter twice, I promise. I think any system is better than no system, and I have had great luck with putting my fabric in color order. I find myself going to my stash instead of out to a shop now that my fabric is organize, and it is also very pleasing to look at.

  53. @.@ wow what a stash! Been drooling over that book too! So generous of you! I really think bookshelves wok best, even though the fabric edges can fade unless you refold regularly. I have a bookshelf where each shelf or cubby hole is square rather than rectangular. That helps keep it under control a bit.

  54. I have 2 (very) large drawers full of material and also a 'tallboy' where all the material stored in it is 'colour corordinated' – however, it still gets out of hand – but if I was lucky enough to win, I'd find space for it!! Thank you for the opportunity!!

  55. I agree with the first comment…get that talented hubby of yours to make you something!

When I finally have a sewing room I have my grandparents armoire that I'm going to have hubby install some shelves on each side where clothes were supposed to hang.

  56. I didn't think that my stash was very big … Until we downsized!! It seems I've got more fabric that I originally thought .. I store my fabric by colour in plastic boxes … Boring, but it works for me!

  57. I have my fabric stash stored in plastic bins – separated by color. Except for the bins for batiks, Christmas & children's fabrics. Thanks.

  58. I'm a fat quarter junkie. I want this book! When I teach children to sew I like to use fat quarters so they can pick several to make a project. It's like picking candy! I like fat quarters rolled up with a rubber band or ribbon and fill up pretty baskets. It easy to see and is decor on shelves, tables, and counters.

  59. I'm afraid I can't help with the storage problem-I had to pull mine down from its bookshelf to make room for my son's cot. It now hides under our bed in storage boxes.

  60. I, too, need help with my fabric stash. Not only do I have my personal stash, but I have a stash of "church fabric" for mission quilting! The fabric is taking over!!
I need the fat quarter book for ideas of what to do with all this fabric!!!

  61. How about a cabinet with roll out drawers. I currently don't have enough of a stash to have a storage issue. I have a few plastic storage drawers that hold all of my sewing things (thread, fabric, rulers, etc.).

  62. I use plastic bins for all my fabrics, to keep out the dog hair and dander. It's not a perfect system, but everything is divided by color and I can see through the plastic. Side note: I do have other bins, too, such as one for special fabrics, one for scrap strings, and ones for wips. ☺️

  63. (I didn't see my comment so I am attempting again! Sorry if I double enter!)
My stash is WAY out of control too. I just moved, now instead of my former dedicated sewing room I have it integrated into my bedroom (sob! lol). Thanks for the chance to win 😀

  64. I've got my fabric in clear totes, those plastic zip containers for comforters and on shelves. I like the idea I saw about using file cabinets and hanging the fabric over the hanging files or the idea of folding fabric around the archival boards used for storing comic books.

  65. I didn't even know what a stash was until I met you, Jo. But not only have you made me an obsessive and compulsive quilter, this thing called 'Stash' has now taken over my house! Stored in baskets but always shouting to be taken out and drooled over lovingly. What have you done, Jo!!!!!

  66. Love your fabric stash and book looks full of great projects. I'm in the same boat with fabric stash storage though, think I need to get rid of some older uglies and come up with some bins to store things. Thanks for the giveaway 🙂

  67. I store my fabric on bookshelves too, so I would be interested in seeing other's suggestions as well! Love the book! Fat Quarters are my favorite thing to work with!

  68. My stash is stored in plastic bins on shelves in a closet. The bins are labeled so I can just pull them down. I do the same in my kitchen. Even my spices are small bins with labels on top. I need to win one of those label makers. I can't wait to see this book.

  69. I store my FQs in IKEA Billy CD racks, just the right size shelves. Great book for helping me whittle down the stash (and make room for some of the fab new fabrics around)!

Hello Jo, it's wonderful to meet you:)
Chiming in here from the USA, Commonwealth of Virginia. I love your drawstring gift bag and what a fabulous way to personalize w/fabric fats for each recipient and down size some of your stash too. We probably all have a fat quarter in mind just for that specific gift recipient.
To hold and control your stash, I love making different size fabric baskets, out of 1/2 yards for the bigger ones or scraps and fat quarters for quart sized. YOu can place those baskets virtually anywhere; on the closet floor or shelves, on window ledges, shelving high and low. Adds so much color and personalization to whatever room you "stash" them in

  71. I did have an IKEA bookcase and stacking boxes inside but it seems to have fallen out of that and various tote bags now contain fabric for different WIP. Buy less I say to myself – doesn't work

  72. I store my fabric on bookshelves and in plastic drawers. It's not working really well at the moment, but I got a new shelf recently and I'm hoping that will help. One of my friends just told me that she uses hanging shoe organizers for storing fat quarters. I'm thinking of trying that out. Easy to see, access and inexpensive.

  73. What a brilliant give away – both the book and fabric look fantastic. As a relatively newcomer to quilting I haven't built up enough of a collection to worry about storage … yet 🙂

  74. Great giveaway Jo, thanks for giving me the chance to win it! When you get some advice on stash storage solutions please share, as mine is definitely spreading!

  75. Oh my…I store large collections of fabric in an upright, vintage chest of drawers. They are out of sight that way and I know where to go whenever I need a large amount of fabrics for a big project.

  76. Oh my…I store large collections of fabric in an upright, vintage chest of drawers. They are out of sight that way and I know where to go whenever I need a large amount of fabrics for a big project.

  77. Oooh my goodness! Soooo excited about this Book! Would love to win your Give-a-way!!! 🙂 Thanks for the chance!

No Stash Storing advice from here…I Neeeed advice myself!! lol (tho I have 2 Quilty Daughters that regularly "shop" my stash! lol (They call it shopping at MomMart!! giggle)

  78. I have a pretty small stash, so no good advice there, but i have a need for good fat quarter projects, so i am looking forward to this book!

  79. Currently, my stash is stored in shoebox sized sterilite boxes. I'm not sure it's working. I'm hoping to sew down my stash a lot this summer and get it a bit more under control

  80. I use a Billy bookcase from Ikea, and now that it is full I'm on a fabric diet and trying to use up stash … I think it's working! I can't wait to have space for some new fabric! Thank you for the giveaway and congratulations Jo!

  81. I'd love to win this great giveaway! I can't help with the storage problem, I have my fabric in baskets on shelves in my closet… Sometimes it gets ugly and I'm glad to have a door to close. Thanks for the chance to win!

  82. Congratulations on the book! Hmm we had cupboards built in to the alcoves in our dining room, originally this was for crockery etc, but now we've had an extension that bit of house is my sewing space and the cupboards are perfect for my stash!

  83. Hi, thanks for the giveaway. I store my smaller cuts of fabric in plastic storage containers – mostly Sistema – the large oblong ones – which are great for stacking. And packing, like I had to do 5 months ago, straight into a cardboard box & no danger of getting wet.

  84. Thanks for a wonderful giveaway. I would love to make lovely gifts to giveaway at Christmas time. I saw on Pinterest using 'suspension files' in a filing cabinet to store fabric – maybe worth exploring. Thanks

  85. My fabris stash fits quite nicely into a couple of small plastic stackable crates. It's a wool storage system I need! There's no more room to hide it under the bed. Kids beds next, I think 😉

  86. I store my fabrics in Ikea plastic boxes but now that my stash has grown, I need a new solution too. Thank you for this great giveaway!

  87. Hi!! Lovely giveaway! I just found your blog through Ali´s Very Berry Handmade! Will be exploring it, it was a great find! Now lets see if I am lucky with this giveaway! 🙂

  88. The fabrics in the giveaway are sooooo beautiful! Oh, to win them! Deciding what to do with them will be a whole lot of fun for sure! — soparkaveataoldotcom

  89. Hi Jo,
My substantial fabric stash is balanced on a top shelf in our airing cupboard (to try to hide it from d.h., but I think he knows it's there really!) and I just hope the cat isn't in the way if my stash falls off the shelf when we aren't around to rescue her.

I also have smaller pieces in plastic bags within a carrier bags and other fabric folded in a fat quarter storeage bag.

Thanks for the chance to win the fabrics and the book.

    Barbara xx

  90. I'm currently trying to figure out a way to organize my scraps and smaller pieces of fabric and came up with using clear plastic shoe boxes. That system is working out ok!
    nikilsend(at)outlook(dot)com

  91. What a fantastic giveaway. My best tip for storing your fabric is to get hold of an old haberdashery cabinet on eBay. My husband managed to get me one last year for £230! It has 16 drawers now full of fabric organized by colour groups and 2 shelves underneath. I'm not saying it holds everything but my house is definitely looking neater.
