Farmer’s Wife 1930s QAL – Ruby

Welcome to the last of my guest posts for the Farmer’s Wife 1930s QAL, hosted by the wonderful Kerry!

This week it is Ruby #89. When I first saw this block I must confess that I thought there was something wrong with it. It does look a little like it’s been badly pieced! But then I thought a bit harder and looked at the name and I realised that it was an interpretation of a faceted jewel! Very clever!

I think this block would’ve actually been way easier to FPP (as the quarters are just like spider’s web quarters). But because I had EPP’d all the rest of my blocks I just couldn’t bring myself to do anything else. This has been a hand sewn project so far and I can’t change that now (I have to keep the purity!).

And so this is the end of my commitment to the Farmer’s Wife 1930s QAL. I have to admit that had I not signed up to do the guest posts on the QAL I may never have done as many blocks as I have (even though I didn’t get very far anyway!). I started off so well and pieced the first 20 by Christmas. My sister was making them alongside me (well not physically but in spirit!) and we managed to sew quite a few together during our annual week in Tenerife in December. 

But then Jane got quite a bit ahead of me (you can check out all her blocks – she has nearly finished – on her Instagram feed here). And then I started to have the problem in my right hand and had to stop hand work all together except for the applique magazine projects I had already signed up to.

I really hope I can take up the project again in the future (Jane and I have another week in Tenerife this year so I may choose this as my holiday project again), but if not I do have these 28 blocks. Maybe another 7 would make a nice 5 x 7 block cot quilt? Or with some wide sashing it could even get up to a small single bed quilt?
