Vintage Home Quilt Along – Month 6

Month 6 already! We are now half way through this QAL!

This month it’s time for some plates.  This was a tricky one because basically they are just a circle, so I struggled coming up with a design until I remembered portholes, a very versatile technique that I learnt from Lu Summers at the first Fat Quarterly Retreat.  And so I used this technique for both designs, the main Dresden ‘Fancy Plate’ and the simple side plates.

I do love a pretty display plate and often treat myself to one from Anthropolgie to add to my collection.  And I had these in mind with the plate above.

This month’s quest blogger is Sarah Edgar of Pretty Fabrics and Trims. I’ve just read her delightful blog post which discusses many things including what she likes to wear everyday! You can read all about it here.  Meanwhile she has produced this lovely version of the side plate using the knock out combo of Black Essex linen and Liberty Tana Lawn! On her blog she has an image of a full sized quilt of these blocks too.

This month’s main block is this Dresden Plate with a porthole ring in the centre. The Tilda fabric looks so pretty in this block! I have used EPP to get the curved ends (with glue rather than tacking) and the whole thing looks a bit like a large daisy. I am thinking of the sort of plate that you would use as a centre piece for a dinner party table to really set off the food.

I like to think Today’s Quilter readers who aren’t following the BOM might still make this as a one-off block.  In fact I might make one with an embroidery in the centre for a cushion!

For the Vintage shop find this month I visited Glasgow.  A young friend acted as a local guide and took me down alleyways and into arcades to find these crazy junk shops that were filled from floor to ceiling with old stuff! I had never seen anything like it (except in those ‘hoarder programmes on the TV!).  If you are someone that suffers from OCD please don’t go there!  But I did find some lovely treasures, enough for two issues.

This month we feature the Ruthven Mews Arcade and specifically the three shops therein that are run by ‘Paul’. It’s all very informal over in Glasgow!

Next month is the last of the crockery items before we move into other rooms in the Vintage Home. Can’t wait to share the next blocks with you!
