Spot the difference – Tendrils Mini Quilt 2

Last year I made a mini quilt as my entry to the Pantone Quilt Challenge. It was one of my first forays into the obsession which would become ‘Tendrils’! You can read about this first quilt here.

Meanwhile Alice, the editor at Love Patchwork and Quilting, asked me to make a version of the mini for the magazine.  So I made this one!  But which one is which?  They do look very similar and I feel like we are playing ‘spot the difference’ with them!

The original piece had an extra pink leaf and this new quilt has orange as the accent colour. Here it is above, beautifully styled in the magazine. It’s in the same issue (59) that my Compass Spin Quilt appears (you wait ages for one of my quilts to appear in LPQ and then, like buses, two come along at once!).

The magazine project features step by step instructions for how to make the improv background to the tendrils using three different improv techniques.  I love making these low-volume backgrounds and fussy cutting little
details.

Unlike the ‘tendrils technique’ that I use for my pouches I have used needle-turn applique to stitch the leaves and stems by hand.  Prior to that I had ‘matchstick quilted’ tight lines on the machine using Aurifil variegated green 50wt thread and then added some hand quilted lines using a few different colours of Aurifil 12wt.

One of the other differences between the two mini quilts is that I added that orange corner to the binding.

In a couple of weeks time I am heading down to Newcastle to teach my Feather’s Quilt workshop at the Quilter’s Guild (QGBI) AGM and I am donating this mini quilt to their fundraising auction.

Speaking of the QGBI I have been writing a few articles for their quarterly publication The Quilter on ‘Quilter’s and Social Media’.  This has coincidentally coincided with the guild recruiting a new digital officer to take care of their social media and she is doing a wonderful job rejuvenating their Instagram account. Deb has set up a new weekly IG event called #QGBIWeekendWIP where members (or anyone!) can share their weekend projects. Why not join in next weekend?

A good reason to think about joining the Quilter’s Guild (if you aren’t already a member) is that you get to book tickets for workshops and lectures at Festival of Quilts a week before the general public! Guild bookings are available nest week on 9th April. I will be teaching again this year, both my Freehand Curves Landscape workshop and my Tendrils Project Pouch. Plus I’ll be giving my Colour Theory for Quilts lecture on the Saturday afternoon! Check out the QGBI website here.
