Vintage Home BOM Quilt Along – Month 8

It’s that time of the month again – phew the weeks seem to speed by at the moment! Yes it’s month 8 of the Vintage Home BOM Quilt Along, and we have finally moved out of the kitchen and found ourselves a little light.

This month’s blocks are a table lamp, complete with pleated shade, and a candlestick, complete with lighted candle!  I have to say that I loved designing and making these blocks, they may just be my favourites so far.

The table lamp was very much based on my own bedside lamp. This was a Greengate lamp (a sort of Danish Cath Kidston) and had a very pretty fabric shade. However it had seen better days so while I was making these blocks I treated it to a brand new shade by maker and designer Rosella & Lime. Fabric designer Sharon had a pop-up shop (along with two other artisan makers) right next door to our Edinburgh store for a few months over Christmas and this particular shade worked perfectly with my bedroom. Rosella and Lime have an Etsy shop here, go check out her beautiful things!

For the candlestick I was thinking about the sort of thing Scrooge carried around in the Christmas Carol, except made of lovely Tilda fabric! There is a little hand applique for this block (just the handle ring and the flame), and I was delighted that Lucy Brennan of Charm About You (who is so well known for her beautiful hand stitching) chose this block for her stop on the QAL.

Here’s Lucy’s version, I love the fabrics she chose! Check out Lucy’s blog post here.

This month’s vintage shop of the month is Unicorn Antiques in the New Town of Edinburgh.  I had a shop back in the early years of this century in the same street (my first shop!) and I walked past Unicorn Antiques most days but never went in! So it was wonderful to finally have a poke around and meet the lovely Nancy and her son David. Nancy has been running the two story shop there for nearly 50 years – quite an achievement!

I think it may be my favourite shop of the month yet (I even love the name!) so go check it out if you are in the area.

I do hope you are enjoying this QAL and it’s never too late to join in as long as you have the magazines.  You can check out many amazing versions of the blocks on Instagram by searching or following the hashtag #TQVintageHomeQAL.

That’s all for this month but tune in next month when we’ll be heading into the sewing room, eek!
