Vintage Home BOM Quilt Along – Month 9

We are moving into the sewing room for month 9 of the Today’s Quilter Vintage Home BOM Quilt Along!

I hope this will be a fun month for everyone.  The row of spools above is such a nice quick project, and it’s a lovely way to showcase different prints.

And then we have two button jars. I’ve made one orange and one turquoise.  My plan is to sew on extra ‘real’ buttons after I’ve finished the quilting, to fill up the jars a little more!

But in the meantime I’ve appliqued tiny circles complete with embroidered ‘holes’ over the jar.

With the theme being vintage sewing supplies this month I dug out some of my collection of old spools,

haberdashery, thimbles, buttons and this ancient embroidered cover for the Radio Times magazine.  I actually found this tucked in the furthest corner of a press (cupboard) when we moved into our previous house, around 16 years ago.  We bought the house from a very old couple who had lived in the house for nearly 50 years.  I didn’t discover the cover until at least a year after we’d moved in.  I think I may have planned to contact them and send it on but I never got round to it.  Or maybe I just really wanted to keep it for myself!

It’s beautifully stitched and harks back to a very different era when this sort of thing would seem a sensible idea (presumably!), though it seems such a crazy thing to make to most people now.  And here speaks someone who loves her Radio Times, and never misses an issue!  I also happen to know that it is published by the same company that publishes Today’s Quilter so it seemed appropriate to feature it.

This month’s vintage store is Hopkinson’s in Nottingham. More of an experience than a store this three story building is crammed with so many different items and activities.

Not only can you find vintage treasures and antiques but you can have guitar lessons and visit the retro beauty parlour!

And, for a small fee, you can also ‘rent’ a glass fronted cabinet and sell your own vintage items. Definitely worth a visit should you find yourself close to Nottingham train station.

That’s all for this month, next month we will only be tackling one block – but it’s a biggy!
