The Summer Breeze BOM Collection

A few months back in this post I told you all about The Thread House Club’s new Summer Breeze BOM and promised to share my finished quilt here.

Well here it is! And as this was finished months ago I now have a number of other Summer Breeze inspired makes to share, all ahead of the actual start of the BOM which is on Monday! Haven’t signed up yet? Well read on for an exclusive READERS DISCOUNT CODE!

I am very pleased with how my quilting turned out on this main quilt. I wanted a ‘watery’ theme as if you could see right through to the bottom of the dragonfly pond. In case it’s not obvious this quilt is supposed to be an abstract depiction of a pond with a large dragonfly hovering above!

So I used pebbles and spirals (which I thought looked like ripple circles) and also a sort of mussel/pond weed type of motif and just drifted in and out of these patterns. It was such fun to do and I see more of this sort of transitioning quilting in my future. Obviously this was accomplished on my Handi Quilter Moxie and I used Aurifil 40/3 thread in off-white.

I opted for a faced binding as I just love the modern vibe it gives quilts.

Meanwhile my two Thread House Buddies had finished their quilt tops. Karen’s is that gorgeous Folk-art inspired palette on the left. She is still hand quilting it at the moment. And Lynne opted for a striking navy background and jewel like colours and finished the whole thing (in a couple of days which is Lynne’s way!).

Once we had finished our three quilts/quilt tops and launched both the BOM club memberships and our quilt kits (still a couple left!) we turned our attention to our bonus pattern! Every year we offer a bonus pattern to all members prior to the actual start of the BOM.

This year we were inspired by one of the very simple quilt blocks to make a set of coasters in their own cute fabric holder. Above is my set made in my fabrics which are all Dashwood Pop Solids. And below left are Lynne’s…

Once we had that sorted we had time to play around with the quilt design and see what else we could make from the blocks and motifs.

We want to give our club members as much inspiration as possible, not just to make the quilt but to use the pattern for many other beautiful items. I started things off by using all the mini motifs to make this nine patch panel.

This was then hand quilted and turned into this cute and colourful cushion!

I used Aurifil 28wt for the hand quilted grid. Usually I go for the 12wt thread and a big stitch colourful look but sometimes it’s nice to be a bit more subtle and go for a more old fashioned look.

Lynne had the genius idea to use the echinacea block to make this stunning garland design!! She has turned it into a 30″ mini quilt and I think it’s fabulous!

Trying out the blocks with these extra projects also gives us a chance to use patterned fabric rather than our original solids and this gives our members a chance to check out the fabric options while they are deciding what to use for their own quilts.

And then last week I decided to make a new version of the star of the quilt – the Dragonfly!

I used Moda Grunge for this and set the dragonfly within plenty of negative space.

I then used a very close together matchstick quilting. One of the reason I wanted a long arm machine was to achieve this effect but this is actually only the second quilt I have used this on.

I really LOVE the texture! It almost looks woven!

This week we’ve been recording our first tutorial videos and double checking the pattern ahead of the first block drop on Monday.

Here is a still from my first video, recorded this morning. We are starting with toadstools and spinning stars. I give a first intro to needle-turn applique and Lynne will show you the raw-edge applique alternative plus a Foundation Paper Piecing class for the stars. And that’s just the first month!

I know I am biased but I really do think that our BOM club is incredible value for money when you are getting a year’s worth of video tutorials in a wide range of techniques, the quilt pattern and many other offerings such as an exclusive swap, a monthly giveaway and a question time live panel.

And to make it even better value I have a last minute exclusive 10% off discount for my blog and newsletter readers! Get £8 off the club membership by using jolastminute10 at checkout. Offer ends Monday at midnight UK time.

So if you want to hang out with me, Karen and Lynne for the next year, learn loads of great stuff and make a stunning quilt you know what to do…
