Tumbling Logs Quilt

I’ve always wanted to make a Tumbler quilt. I loved the simplicity of the design, but then again, I thought it almost looked too simple to maintain my interest for a full sized quilt.

And then I wondered what it would look like if I ‘log cabined’ around it. A light bulb went on in my head and the name Tumbling Logs came to me. I knew I just had to make that quilt!

I actually finished this a few months back but as it was destined for August’s Popular Patchwork magazine, so I have been saving it’s unveiling here until after publication. It actually came out 2 weeks ago but I have only just got my hands on a copy!

As Popular Patchwork has a wide readership from modern to traditional
quilters, I decided to dip in to my large, and long-hoarded Kaffe Fassett stash for this quilt, as I
feel these are great cross-over fabrics. I also thought the large tumbler shape would show off the big floral patterns very well.

This is probably the brightest, most colourful quilt I’ve ever made (and
that’s saying something as I don’t do subtle!). But as it was for the
August issue I thought I could get away with it. I actually love how
cheerful it is even though I know it may be too loud for some!

I love taking my finished quilts all over ‘the farm’ to photograph them, thank you for indulging me by looking at them all 🙂

I FMQed this with a trailing leaf pattern which was really fun to do (I can’t believe I actually find FMQ fun now, it used to feel such a chore!). The back is a Riley Blake fabric, and the binding is a black and white floral from ‘Adventures with Alice’ by Darlene Zimmerman. With so much colour on the top only a black and white would do for the binding. The finished size is 63 x 64″.

And I needn’t have worried about making a ‘too modern’ quilt as look at this stunning ‘Waiting Waxwing’ quilt by Kerry PennyDog that graces the front cover (I met lovely Kerry at FQR too!)! There’s also a big article and quilt project from Tula Pink. I really think Popular Patchwork is becoming more modern all the time!

This quilt will be part of our Scottish Modern Quilt Exhibition which we are holding at our shop as part of the Edinburgh Fringe this year. The exhibition starts this Saturday, 3rd August (till Sunday 25th August), and I really hope some of my lovely readers will come along. Having seen all the quilts in the flesh now (over 40 plus cushions and bags!) I can say with confidence that you won’t be disappointed!
