Vintage Home BOM Quilt Along – Month 5

Welcome to month 5 of the Vintage Home BOM Quilt Along! Wow we are getting through them, nearly half way now!

This month we will be making bowls! Some of you may recognise the block above from my ‘Dishes Quilt’, the first quilt that I made for Today’s Quilter (issue 3).

I loved how this quilt turned out and I expanded the idea for my Crockery Cupboard Quilt. But I knew there was more life in this idea yet (I love a bit of recycling!) so the whole idea for the Vintage Home BOM evolved.

This time I decided to make a large bowl with a touch of patchwork decoration, hence the Flying Geese strip.  I also spent a while fussy cutting that fabric to get it to match!

And that is my main tip for this month – watch your directional fabric!  If you use smaller prints it won’t matter so much but for larger designs like the one above it’s worth spending a little time getting the pattern repeat right.

I designed all the bowl blocks (and my earlier quilts) to use the Drunkard’s Path dies that come with the Sizzix Big Shot machine (because I have one!).  These cut out a few curves at once so the important thing is to make sure your pieces are right sides together before you cut them. You’ll also need to make two of the smaller bowls, and just one of the large bowl.

This month’s guest blogger is the amazing Carolyn Forster who probably has more cover quilts in Today’s Quilter than anyone else, including this month’s issue!

It’s packed with fabulous projects and features and comes with a really handy 45 degree corner tool.

I love Carolyn’s work and was delighted that she chose the bowls for her month in the QAL.

Carolyn used the fabulous Outback Wife fabric by Gertrude Made for her blocks and made quite a few! I also love the way she changed the direction of one of the FG strips.  Find out more about Carolyn’s blocks here.

And speaking of Outback Wife, we just took delivery of 4 bolts of Cathi’s second collection!  They are so lush!  I can’t wait to use them for something special. Above are the pieces I cut from the bolts to bring home, what I like to call ‘Jo’s tax’ 😉

We have these listed in our online store here or they’re available at our Edinburgh shop.

This month’s Vintage Shop of the Month is the Hampton Court Emporium which is in the lovely little town of East Molesey (where Hampton Court Palace is situated).

It’s definitely worth a visit and while you are there check out the excellent quilt store, Creative Quilting, that’s just down the road!

As always let me know if you have any questions regarding the QAL and if you are new to the whole project check out the first month’s post for useful info like fabric requirements.

See you next month!

  1. I just started reading your blog. Am looking in to subscribing to Today’s Quilter so I can follow your BOM. What back issues do I need to buy to begin at the beginning? Issue 29,30,31 and 32? Love you revisiting of your dishes and would love to follow along.

Greetings from USA by the way!
