Flower Bowl Wall Hanging

What a week it’s been for weather! Almost all of the UK has been in the grip of the ‘Beast from the East’ and Shangri la Farm is buried under a deep blanket of snow.  I have had to cancel all my classes even for tomorrow and the supermarkets look like the zombie apocolypse has happened!  We really can’t cope with snow in this country!

So instead let’s comfort ourselves with thoughts of summer and a big bowl of flowers!

This applique quilt is a pattern in the latest issue of Simply Moderne, a quarterly magazine by the publishers of Quiltmania.

I’ve been a huge fan of this magazine since it launched a few years back.  It’s absolutely packed with amazing projects and interesting features, and has the biggest, glossiest photos of quilts!

I haven’t actually received my copy yet but I do know (from social media) that it also features amazing quilt patterns from the likes of Latifah Saafir and Scott Hansen. And that fabulous cover quilt is simply stunning!

I made the centre panel about 18 months ago as a class sample for the first Thread House Retreat.  It was definitely one of the best things I’d ever done and I was thrilled when Simply Moderne asked if I could make it into a larger piece.

I decided to use a mixture of pieced and applique borders and started to make these strips of circles within circles that got everyone very excited on Instagram!

I used similar colour to those I’d used in the centre (basically ALL the colours!) and once it was finished I hand quilted the whole thing, including kantha style rows of stitching on the bowl itself.

The finished piece measures 28 x 72 inches.

I used Aurifil 80wt thread for the most of the applique (it hadn’t been released when I sewed the original centre panel) and Aurifil 12wt in a number of colours for the hand quilting.

The bowl is made from a Jennifer Paganelli fabric from her Color Brigade line.  Most of this piece was made with scraps apart from the Dashwood Twist backgrounds and the Essex linen I used for the circle strips.

This is definitely one of my favourite makes EVER. It will become a treasured heirloom I hope.

  1. Defintiely the perfect remedy for winter! There is such a great vibrancy in the colours and the mix of florals and geometrics is so modern and fun. Hope that all is starting to return to normal now the storms have passed.

  2. Hi Jo! I have this magazine and loved your quilt the best in the issue! I’m starting to cut out all the pieces now and getting very excited!! I am concerned though, that I can’t find a diagram for the whole appliqué piece. The instructions say “Using a light source, mark the motif outlines” but is there a diagram for those markings? All I can find are the pieces on the pullout pattern sheet. Please help, I hope to be able to manage this project. Thank you!
