Aurifil DOM – it’s time for my block!

Aurifil 2018 Design TeamBack in November I posted about the 2018 Aurifil Designer of the Month programme and the exciting fact that I was one of this year’s designers!

Well my month has come round already – eeek!

The theme this year is ‘The Places We Go’ and the palette is Black and White and a Colour. This Block of the Month programme is hosted by the wonderful Pat Sloan.

I had a short trip to Lisbon last November and was very impressed by the beautiful tiles that adorn many of the buildings in this amazing city.  This seemed like the perfect subject for my block.

I’ve chosen turquoise as my colour and based the design on an amalgam of a few different tiles.

It looks pretty stunning when you ’tile’ it as you can see by this image from EQ7.  I would LOVE to make a quilt like this one day!

You can read a quite extensive feature about me and the inspiration for the block over on the Aurifil Blog.  Meanwhile if you make a version of the block and add it to Pat Sloan’s blog you can be in with the chance of winning an Aurifil thread box! All the details are in the Aurifil blog post.

And talking about winning a thread box, Lucy from @charmaboutyou is giving away the last of my Sherbert Dip thread collection ‘giveaway allocation’ over on instagram right now!

Meanwhile I’ve started my very own Aurifil DOM quilt using these fabulous blocks from January and February. On the left is Dresden Dreaming by Katja Marek and on the right is Birch Ball by Scott Hansen.  I’m still finishing the Dresden.

I’ve decided to try and limit my ‘colour’ to hot colours like red, orange and pink. So here is the version of my block that will be in this quilt (the original blocks get sent to Pat and she makes them into a quilt).

Let’s see how I get on just sticking to those few colours!

All the blocks in the Aurifil DOM programme (and all the previous years) are free patterns available on the Aurifil blog. It’s a wonderful resource! So head over there and check it all out and I look forward to seeing your versions of my block.

  1. What an awesome block! it really is stunning when put into EQ and to see it all together as a quilt. I especially love the red, white and black version.

  2. Wow Jo! Your block is stunning. Congrats again- your interview is very interesting, and I hope good things come from the publicity .

  3. Hi Jo

Love your block. My husband and I spent time in Porto, Portugal and did a trip up the Duro Valley and I fell in love with all the tiles on the buildings and the murals in the railway stations. I too, took many photos with a plan to turning some into blocks. You’ve given me a start. I have photos of that same tile.

  4. Whoever wins your giveaway will be very lucky. I was so thrilled to win the Aurifil Sherbert Dip collection at the retreat. Good luck everyone.
