More Social Bite Village Quilts!

I have had an absolutely fantastic response to my call-out for quilts for the Social Bite Homeless Village project! Thank you so much to all the quilter’s who have so far sent or promised quilts.

So let’s have a look at some of this latest batch of charity quilts, and we’ll start off with a very special quilt and it’s twin.

In my first and second post about this project I shared a quilt that had been made out of  a block swap between the Edinburgh MQG and the Augusta MQG.  Members of the Edinburgh MQG kindly donated all the blocks they received to be made into quilts for our quilt drive. Mags and Pam put together two quilt tops and Mags (who is a super speedy sewer!) completed her quilt and it was one of the first I received.  Pam has now finished her quilt, and what a fabulous job she has done!  I am very impressed with her beautiful FMQ (and proud too since she attended one of my FMQ workshops!).

I just had to get the first quilt out and take a photo of them together.  I think they are really stunning and look so modern! And I love how international they are with handmade love coming all the way from across the Atlantic.

I had a couple of Sew-in Days at the studio earlier in the year and this stunner from Carol , which was worked on there, has now been finished. Carol had made the central panel at home and finished it with the borders at the sew-in day, then took it home to quilt. Fabulous FMQ again from another of my students!

The lovely Jenny, who already makes so many amazing quilts for the Sibling’s Together project, sent me this bold, bright and beautiful quilt. I love this simple graphic pattern and the cheerful colours!

The very generous Claire donated a jelly roll which Mags took home and turned into this QAYG log cabin quilt. It’s based on a quilt pattern I did for Love Patchwork and Quilting magazine a few years back, but Mags has added her own special touch with the ‘hearts inside a house’ centre! This is Mags fourth quilt for the project – thank you Mags!!

My son Felix and his girlfriend Colleen were my helpers again for this photo shoot.

Somehow they managed to get in the shot too!

I lovely lady called Sheila donated both the next two quilts. She brought them along to the Quilter’s Guild Region 16 day that I gave a talk at in March and handed them to me in person.

The first one is a fabulous sampler quilt in the perfect ‘gender neutral’ colour palette.

I think I like the second sampler quilt even more, with these lovely soft shades that remind me of heathers.  A huge thank you for these beautiful quilts Sheila!

This next one may be my favourite so far, it’s be the wonderful Sarah and I just adore those little pops of yellow! I also love the fussy cutting of the text prints.

This is such a pleasing quilt and I especially appreciate it as I know Sarah doesn’t get a lot of quilting time due to demands of motherhood! Thanks Sarah!

Usually quilters send me a message about their quilts before sending them, but I’ve also just had a few folks dropping them off at the shop with no warning.  I was especially delighted to receive this stunner from my student Jenny.  This is the quilt Jenny made in my Improv Square Quilt evening course last year.  It’s a fantastic version of the design, which was initially the Edinburgh MQG entry to the MQG Charity Quilt Challenge 2015, and then turned into a pattern by myself for Love Patchwork and Quilting, with the actual quilt being raffled for charity.  So this design has already produced two charity quilts (raising over £1200) so it’s especially nice that it’s being used for charity again.

I love how this looks with the dark background!  Thanks so much Jenny!

Another Student Anne brought this cheerful red and white quilt in to the shop recently too.  I have a passion for red and white quilts and plan to make one very soon.  Meanwhile thank you so much for this Anne!

And then yet another of our shop customers Sarah, brought this gorgeous quilt in last week.

What a really effective design.  It’s one of those quilts that looks even better from a distance. Thank you Sarah!

This next one was sent by Anna and made by the ‘After Eights Patchwork Group’, I asked Anna to tell me a little more about her group and where they were based:

“We’re a very small group of 6-7 ladies who meet just “after eight” on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month in Maidenhead. All except myself and Jane are retired.”

Love the crazy patchwork feel and the quilting on this one. Thanks everyone!

I love the design of this quilt, donated by Maureen, those two rows of smaller squares at the top and bottom work so well!

And the colours are fab too, thanks Maureen!

This next one is by another of my students (one of my first ever!) Marilynne. I really love this sunny pretty quilt. But as I now have so many for this year’s intake to the homeless village (twice as many as I need!) I asked Marilynne if she would like to donate this to Siblings Together instead.  It just looked so particularly perfect for a Siblings Together quilt! Marilynne agreed so this is going to them.

Fantastic quilting Marilynne and thank you so much!  I always thought that if we received some quilts that looked like they would be a better fit for ST then (and as long as it was okay with the makers) we could send them to Siblings Together instead.  As a lot of the people that end up homeless have been through the care system so I like to think of these two quilt drives as a sort of pincer movement of quilty love!

Jonathan and I will be attending the official launch of the Social Bite Village in a couple of weeks time. I will be back with more news soon about this and about the initial hand over of quilts.

Meanwhile, due to my shortage of storage facilities I have decided not to accept any more quilts this year (other than those that have already been promised), but I will need more next year so keep an eye out for posts in the New Year!

And another huge thank you to all the amazing quilters!

  1. Such a fabulous response Jo. Hope the love that’s gone into the quilts is felt by their new owners

  2. Hi Jo. I have two completed and possibly a third one from our group. Do you still need them? I can drop them through to the shop if you do.
