Shutter Speed – A Quilt Planner Quilt

Another exciting quilt reveal today!

This year I was very honoured to have my submission to design a quilt for the Quilter’s Planner selected. The Quilter’s Planner launched it’s pre-orders a couple of weeks back and last Thursday they started to reveal the 2020 quilts. Today is my day to show off my quilt!

Do you use the Quilter’s Planner? Or is it new to you? I really think this product is the most amazing tool for organising your life, quilts and everything else!

Every year QP chooses a guest designer and for 2020 it’s my quilting BFF Karen Lewis! This means Karen has designed the QP Block of the Month which is available in two colourways.

There a lots of other new customisation features this year, like being able to choose from four different Karen Lewis covers! I have chosen the turquoise, which one would you choose?

You can also choose whether the week starts on a Monday or a Sunday which is absolutely crucial to me (it’s Monday of course!!!), a vertical or a horizontal layout, graph or dot paper, and Monthly Calendar ONLY with Graph paper in the Weekly Section (for people who prefer to keep notes, or designs or bullet journal instead of using a weekly calendar).

Head over here to check out the whole caboodle and start ordering you very own Quilter’s Planner exactly as you want it to be!

While you are there why not check out all the new accessories to go alongside the planner, like these cute stickers and the Clip In Master To Do List and Habit Tracker (above), both of which I’ve added to my order. I am going to be so organised next year!

Alongside the Planner you will receive the Quilter’s Planner magazine which contains patterns for 12 stunning quilts, (including mine!) features on hand quilting and Karen Lewis, and much more.

One of the main benefits of having a quilt featured in the Quilter’s Planner is that it gets photographed on location by the incredible Kitty Wilkins of Night Quilter!

My quilt went on a little holiday to Costa Rica for these images and I think they are amazing! Thank you Kitty!

I started making this quilt as soon as I got back from QuiltCon early this year and with only days to spare before deadline! Luckily it all worked like a dream.

The original idea was to make a quilt that looked like wonky improv curves but which was actually a proper pattern with templates. So I designed a  number of simple curved blocks which then got mixed together to form these wonky rings.  The pattern has enough instructions for you to make an exact replica or the freedom to switch the quarter blocks around and make it unique to you.

Karen had shown me a preview of her latest collection ‘Wayside’ last Autumn, in the hope I would want to make something with it (as if I would say no to this!), and that was the initial inspiration for this quilt. I loved all the neutrals in her new line and decided to add just bright pops of colour in the rings. But not even all the rings, as some blocks are all neutral. This is actually quite a restrained quilt for me!

When I had finished I really didn’t know what to call it so I asked around my immediate contacts and Jane (my wonderful Girl Friday form the shop) said the blocks reminded her of a camera lens and I could see immediately what she meant, hence the name Shutter Speed.

As most of you know I pretty much use an overall FMQ pattern on all my quilts, using my domestic Janome MC9400. I love quilting this way but when it comes to modern quilts it can have it’s drawbacks. I absolutely adore the look of  matchstick quilted straight lines, especially for a modern quilt, but I just can’t get that on a large quilt on my machine, not with a finish I am happy with anyway.

So my solution this time was to use a square, straight line version of my current favourite FMQ pattern ‘interlocking rainbows’.  This has given the quilt a really nice straight dense texture, similar to matchstick quilting. I’ll definitely be using this again!

I do hope you will consider buying a Quilter’s Planner for 2020, there are so many reasons why it is worth the investment!

For those of you in the UK and Europe, Karen Lewis is hoping to stock the Planners which should cut down on the delivery costs a lot. Check out Karen’s recent IG post about it here.

If you are in the US or just want to order one NOW then head over here to take a look.

And I will leave you with another of Kitty’s stunning photos.

  1. Shutter Speed is the perfect name for this quilt! You had me at “wonky improv”, but to think you’ve built a pattern for this is genius! Too bad you couldn’t accompany your masterpiece to Costa Rica for that photo shoot. Congratulations on making it into the planner! <3

  2. This is a fabulous quilt Jo! Would be fab for so many people, especially as a boys/men quilt design which can so often be tricky. Shutter Speed is a brilliant name for it too.

  3. Another fabulous and distinctive quilt, love the quilting. Off to look at the Planner now, sounds very interesting.

  4. Love your Shutter Speed quilt. The neutrals and pops of color in the rings are fabulous. Congratulations on inclusion in Quilter’s Planner.
