Patchwork Pony Sustainable Sew Along Final Round Up Post

We have come to the end of the Patchwork Pony Sustainable Sew Along and it’s time to wrap things up and share some of the amazing ponies and unicorns! And I’ll be revealing the winner of the grand prize!

It’s been a wonderful experience hosting this sew along and I’ve been really moved by all the stories you have shared with me through your SAL posts. Many of you made your ponies out of treasured fabric that brought back precious memories or even helped with the grieving process. I’m also delighted and quite overwhelmed by how much you all took on board the sustainable message of this SAL, going way beyond my own initial sustainability ideas and being  really ingenious and creative.

Let’s start sharing some of the ponies while I chat!

I do want to tag each one as I go along so the delightful unicorn at the top of the page is by Chris Black and the two ponies above are by, on the left, Pam Fallon-Cousins (and named Tony the Pony – he has a fabulous back story which really must be read!) and above right, Sue Marsh.

These two cuties are by Irene McConnell, on the left and on the right Lee MacDonald.

Please do check out the hashtag on Instagram #patchworkponysustainablesewalong and the Facebook Group here for more details about these ponies/unicorns and also for many more! I have tried to include as many as possible here but obviously couldn’t get them all in.

Here is a mosaic of just some of my favourites from the Instagram hashtag (and there are so many more!). Clockwise from top left: @fabricandflour, @stitchesnotsurtures, @janbevan, @oh_gosh_donut, @darlingdi, @lisa.eckels, @peggsyardquilters, @getahashtagkim, @cnellea8

You guys have been so creative with your different versions of the pattern! I’ve got so many great ideas from you for future ponies (and there will be more!).

One of the things I wanted to try out was scaling the pattern down to make smaller versions. I even got as far as printing a 50% and a 75% pattern but no further. So I was delighted when Kaye of @kaye.space on Instagram tried this out for me by making both of these versions! It’s like she read my mind 🙂

The photo above shows the original size too for scale. How cute does that tiny one look???!

The other thing that amazed me was how many ponies some of you made! Who knew this was going to turn out to be so addictive?! I think the most I’ve counted so far is 9 and that’s more then me!!  But I’m taking this as a great sign that you all enjoyed making them so much and the pattern worked really well.

On the left above we have a pony by Jamie N Johnston and on the right by Sue Harris (with cute button eyes!).

Speaking of the pattern I managed to sell over 500 copies which has meant a whopping big donation to Create and Sustain! I decided to transfer the first £500 once I hit the 500 mark and then will do subsequent transfers every few months depending on sales.  Thank you so much to everyone who bought a pattern!

Two more ponies to share, the Crazy Patchwork pony above left is by Jane Doty and above right by Brenda Inglis.

Did you miss this SAL or just can’t get enough of it? I have plans for another one later in the year with a bit of a new twist, I’ll reveal more in August/September.

Meanwhile I have a lot of ponies on my Schoolhouse sofa!  9 to be precise (including my 2 original dala horses) and now I can’t sit down as there’s no room!

So I think it’s time that I off loaded most of them and I have decided to auction these with all proceeds going to charities working to help refugees in and from Ukraine. I’m still working out the details but this will hopefully happen within the next 2 weeks. Sign up to my newsletter via widget at the top of this page to be among the first to hear about it.

Time to announce the winner of the Grand Prize Draw!  I went back through all the FB group posts and the IG # posts and gathered all the names together before randomly drawing…..

LEE MACDONALD!! Congratulations Lee!! I will get in touch with you via Facebook or just email me and pass on your address.

I’m going to leave you with the fabulous Jean Genie (complete with Ziggy Stardust lightning flash!!) made by Jude Chalmers.

A massive THANK YOU to everyone who took part and made this such a positive, heartwarming and fun experience! Patchwork Ponies Forever!!

  1. We have plans for more. Tony the Pony is off to find his Danish cousin and the enigmatic kelpie he has heard tales of….

  2. A massive thank you right back to you Jo! Our quilting group is planning to make them to donate to Children’s Home Society of Florida (as you know), and intend to make announcements about it soon. Then, in September we’re holding at least two workshops to sew them together. I am already imagining a corral-full of these darlings, and can’t wait to see them. Thank you for your generous, giving spirit! Many people are benefitting from all your efforts. Hugs.
