More Sashiko

Issue 17 of Love Patchwork and Quilting hits the newsstand today and it includes the next project in my ‘stitchy series’, this time Sashiko!

Karen Lewis’s quilt on the front cover is just delightful and a real bright spark in these dark months. I am in love with Fiona’s spool bunting – what a genius idea! And inside you will find a stunning AMH ‘pretty potent’ quilt by Lynne, plus of course so much more!

This month’s project is a notebook holder with a panel of sashiko and some patchwork too. It fits a large A4 book or diary.
I usually make my notebook holders with button closures but this seemed to work better with a baker’s twine tie.

Every project in this series comes with a little hanging heart ‘mini make’. This one has a single flower pattern.
I had some requests for a sashiko class by my students so I am putting on a half day in February to make sashiko coasters like these samples I made below.
Lovely Sarah bought me a copy of The Ultimate Sashiko Source Book by Susan Briscoe which has been very useful for research. I would thoroughly recommend it if you are interested in trying sashiko.

Meanwhile I have my own Japanese helper who is coaching me on the meanings of the different sashiko patterns. Hikaru is one of our loveliest customers and the winner of the best decorated tote bag at last year’s Stitch Gathering. She is coming along to the class to add some authentic flavour and share some fascinating information!

Unfortunately that class is already full, but I am sure I will repeat it.
