Vintage Home BOM Quilt Along – Month 11 and 12
Amazingly we have arrived at the final month of our Vintage Home BOM Quilt Along already!
I think one of the reasons it seems to have come around so much quicker than expected is due to the fact that I missed the blog post for month 11 – ooops! Sorry about that!
This year August was especially busy for me and the issue of Today’s Quilter came out while I was at Festival of Quilts. By the time I remembered it was too close to this latest issue coming out so I thought I would combine the two in one big finale post!
Of course there will be one more post after this – the big reveal of the final quilt next month!
Let’s have a look at what we missed in month 11 – this beautiful set of vintage luggage! This is the biggest block yet and I think the one that makes the most of the Tilda Fabric, I can just imagine actual luggage in these fabrics, wouldn’t that be lovely?
Though large it is a straightforward and simple block which won’t take you very long. Unlike the month 12 blocks that is…
For the last month we’re concentrating on the more frivalous and less practical aspects of our vintage home – ornaments and pictures.
I have quite a collection of ceramic ornaments at home so I had plenty of inspirational subjects to choose from. Of course every home needs a cat even if it is just a cat ornament so I chose my Wemyss Ware cat to recreate in fabric!
If you haven’t heard of Wemyssware before then check out this website here to find out more. We’ve had this blue cat for nearly 30 years so I was pretty shocked to find out how much these cost now!! I really should put this on a lower shelf I think…
I did enjoy stitching my version of the cat. I used needle-turn applique (with a little embroidery for the face) but it’s fine to use raw edge applique with Bondaweb instead (with my blessing!). It was quite hard to get the face right on this cat!
The lovely Laura Pritchard, technical editor at Today’s Quilter, is playing along with the QAL this month. She has created her own version of the Wemyss Ware cat from this beautiful Makower red fabric.
You can read a great blog post about Laura’s cat block (and gorgeous cat!) on the Today’s Quilter blog here. Laura also shares some applique tips too, plus a great tip for embroidering the face – I like Laura’s face better than my own! (and her cat’s face isn’t bad either 😉 !).
Lastly there is a little more applique and some lovely embroidery to create my version of a ‘Home Sweet Home’ sampler picture. Some of you may recognise this design as I have slightly recycled an older, larger version of this block that I made for a mini quilt around 3 years ago (I am a big fan of recycling!). I have changed the text embroidery here as I was never really happy with the original.
So that’s it for the full 12 month’s worth of blocks! I hope you are all excited to see the final quilt. Look out for a post in 3 – 4 weeks time!
Meanwhile please keep sharing your beautiful completed blocks on Instagram using the #TQVintageHomeQAL hashtag. Thanks so much for stitching along with me!
I love your colors and all your creations. Hope to attend one day..❤
Hi, I love your blocks of the month. You did a month in the Country quilt revealing your finished design in issue 28 of Today’s quilter. The Snowdrops and Spring flowers blocks look great and I would love to make them but don’t know what issue I need to buy (from the archive I guess). Can you help?
